Meta unveiled a feature in the Android beta version of WhatsApp that provided the same file-sharing capabilities between two Android smartphones via a local network as Quick Share. This feature will give you a new way to transfer files between nearby Android and iOS devices without using the internet over the local network (Wi-Fi Direct). It can also be used to transfer files from an iPhone to an Android device, which makes it a great alternative to AirDrop.
Nearby Share is a feature of WhatsApp for iOS 24.15.10.70, the most recent beta version, according to WABetaInfo. This feature allows users to share files of any kind—photos, movies, documents, and more—with adjacent Android phones as well as other nearby iPhones over Wi-Fi Direct, which eliminates the need for internet access.
The functionality of Nearby Share in WhatsApp for iOS varies slightly from that of Android. When you utilize this function on an Android device, WhatsApp displays neighboring Android devices. When you utilize this function on iOS, though, WhatsApp will display a QR code. To connect to this phone, the other Android or iOS device needs to scan it.After that, you can move files between Android and iOS phones. Currently, third-party apps installed on iOS and Android smartphones provide the same capabilities.
However, file transfers between adjacent devices of the two platforms will get more simpler because WhatsApp is already deployed on millions of smartphones.
Right now, internal testers are the only ones who can use Nearby Share in WhatsApp for iOS. In the coming weeks, Meta may make the functionality available to beta testers. In the following months, the stable WhatsApp version for iOS and Android may be released to the general public.
Google combined Samsung’s Quick Share and Android’s Nearby Share earlier this year. With Wi-Fi Direct, users may wirelessly transfer any kind of file—including documents, videos, images, and other forms of files—from one Android device to another that is close by using a method that doesn’t require the internet.
