Google has made updates to the Android Auto compatibility guidelines. You must now be running Android 9.0 or a later version on your smartphone in order to use this helpful in-car assistant. Previously, Android 6.0 or later phones could be used with Android Auto. Google has raised these standards over time, though. You required Android 8.0 in 2022. It is now Android 9.0. Avoid overly worrying. The majority of individuals already own phones that adhere to this new standard.
Google data indicates that relatively few phones are still running Android 8.0. You’ll still need a car that supports Android Auto and a high-quality USB cable in order to utilize it. You will need a suitable auto system and an even newer phone (Android 10 or later) in order to utilize it wirelessly.
Android Auto compatibility change:
Google officially raised the Android Auto compatibility to demand Android 9.0 or higher as of July 2024, updating the relevant support page for Android Auto. Along with this, there is now no need for the “latest Android Auto app,” as starting with Android 9.0, the app is a system program on all Android smartphones. It is still stated on the official Android Auto page that Android 8.0 or later is required, indicating that Google made this adjustment not too long ago.
Notably, users shouldn’t be significantly impacted by this. As of July 2024, slightly over 6% of active devices are running Android 8.0 (Oreo), compared to only 8% of devices in 2023, based on Google’s distribution chart in Android Studio.
We first learned that Google was planning to stop supporting older versions of Android Auto in December of last year, but the details that were available at the time were vague as to when or which version would be needed going forward.
It’s also crucial to keep in mind that these are the very minimum specifications needed to use Android Auto via a wired connection. Google requires Android 10.0 with specific Google apps, or Android 11.0 or higher, in order to use the platform wirelessly.

With this modification, Google will be able to launch more features and enhance user experience across the board. Even while some people with older phones might be disappointed, the overall experience will be better overall, thus it’s worth the tiny fee.
